Ethical Theories (by 1 Oct)

We've been discussing ethical theory.  We'll use three main ones, and briefly look at a 4th.  They are:
1. Utilitarianism
2. Kant's theory
3. Virtue ethics
4. Rawls' theory of justice

Question 1: Which theory makes the most sense to you?  Tie you answer to what you learned about yourself in the EthicsGame.

Question 2: Using your theory of choice, analyze "Deflate Gate."  Someone will first need to briefly describe the situation so we all understand the same details.

Response: respond to one post of your classmates' analysis of Deflate Gate.

  1. Utilitarianism makes the most sense to me because I like the principal because I think it focuses on taking educated risks rather then following your heart, and that could easily be misguided. I think a utitarian would think that the patriots should turn themselves in, in the deflate gate situation.

  2. I think that Utilitarianism is easier for me to understand than the other theories because we talked about it a lot in class. It states that you need to minimize the harm or maximize the good for the all of the people. This relates to what I have learned about in the EthicsGame by my lens being the reputation and relationship, I want to help people and I tend to follow the rules of society in order to be a good citizen. I feel like the Utilitarianism reflects my views as a person. In the situation of the Deflate Gate, I feel that the Patriots should turn themselves in as a way of reducing the bad tension, it would eliminate the bad for the greater good of the people.

    1. I agree with the statement that the "patriots should turn themselves in because it would reduce tension." Admitting they were wrong will take away the thought from everyone that they are cheaters, and they know they were wrong.

  3. Utilitarianism is the theory I best understand and make sense of. This is the theory that I felt I best understood when we discussed it in class and I felt we went over this theory more than the others. Utilitarianism is simply what maximizes pleasure or minimizes pain for the greatest number. In the ethics game and discovering my lens being reputation I tend to go out of my way to help others and put individuals needs before my own. I follow rules and listen to my heart rather than my mind. I just think that the Utilitarianism theory best relates to who I am was a person, including my morals and views of life. Using the the theory of Utilitarianism to discuss the Deflate Gate situation would be the Patriots denying the win and turning themselves is admitting they lost. By doing this I feel they are eliminating the bad things that could occur for whats best or for the good.

  4. Utilitarianism is one of the four theories that makes the most sense to me. I understand this theory the best because of the amount of time we have spent either talking about it, or reading about it. Utilitarianism states that "what maximizes pleasure or minimizes pain for the greatest number". My lens for the ethics games was the reputation lens.I love being there for others and putting someones trouble before mine. I agree with being in the particular lens, for one reason I am majoring in nursing so it is very beneficial that I enjoy putting others before myself.Using Utilitarianism for the deflate gate would be having the cheaters admit they lost and admitting they were doing the wrong. By admitting their wrong doing, it would help things fall into place for the better.

  5. Like the rest of my classmates, Utilitarianism is the one that makes the most sense to me. In the deflate gate, the patriots would've more than likely turned themselves in. They would think about he circumstances of there actions and make the logical decision.

  6. I agree with my classmates. Utilitarianism makes the most sense to me. My lens for the ethics game is reputation. I love being there for others and doing the best i can to help others out. Utilitarianism for the deflate gate would be having the cheaters admit that they lost and that they did wrong. By doing so it would really help the situations fall into place.
