Thinking of your cultural events, answer the following:
1) what did you do that was new and/or uncomfortable for you? what did you learn from that?
2) what are you learning about yourself, your classmates & new friends, by participating in events outside of the classroom?
Bonus if you can tie your observations to anything we've read, watched, or discussed in class.
Cultural Events
ReplyDelete1. I went to the play Frankenstein and I really enjoyed the acting, I am not really into going to plays, or art shows but this did interest me and I did not want it to end. I learned that not everything enjoying to watch has to be sports, it could also be something different than what society is use too. (Oprah, singing, plays, piano solos)
2. I learned about myself that I am very interested in watching plays. Outside the classroom I really don't watch tv or do anything besides watch/play basketball, so when I went to this play, I was thinking to myself "this is actually really comical/interesting" something I never thought I would say.
I think watching the play ties into our discussion how Liberal Arts and Athletes can be labeled as the "same" but different. I say the same because in both liberal arts and athletics you have to have practices, you need to be focused, you have to have good time management skills, and you need to be skilled. When I say but different I mean there are certain aspects in liberal arts than there is in athletics, vise versa. In liberal arts you don't need to know how to run up and down a court/football field in a timely frame. In athletics you don't need to keep practicing the same "play" over and over and over again. You normally do it once or twice then you can get it down with some practice outside of your sport. But, in liberal arts you really have to keep rehearsing before you perform in front of an audience. I believe they both are very much the same.
#1. For one of my cultural events I attended the Frankenstein Play that Thomas More performed. I have not been to many entertaining performances or plays, but this play for sure kept me intrigued and interested throughout the entire show. I was familiar with the story Frankenstein prior to watching and I thought the story was very well played out and easy to follow along and understand. One thing I did not know was that the creator is Frankenstein and not the creature. I was totally oblivious and dumbfounded when I discovered the creator of the creatures last name is Frankenstein, rather than that being the name of the creature. I have always attended sporting events knowing I would enjoy them, but never did I think I would be so into this performance like I was.
ReplyDelete#2. I learned that going out and participating and attending in events or things that I might not have unless assigned to was a very good way to get me out of my comfort zone and allowing me to explore other things I never knew I would find so interesting or even begin to think to do. I have always been the person to stick to things I am comfortable with, like sporting events, instead of branching out and doing something different. I went into the play with a negative attitude thinking I would not enjoy it and find it waste of time, but shortly after the play started I realized it was not so bad and something I would certainly consider doing again.
I agree with Maggi that after watching Frankenstein a lot of practice, hard work, and dedication is put into something you love such as Liberal Arts or Athletics. There are many differences in athletics and liberal arts, but it just depends on what the individual is interested in, but in a sense are very alike. You have to practice plays over and over again to get them right just like you would have to rehearse over and over to make sure you knew what to do and you were well aware of all the parts. Different talents and skills are brought out differently, but both work just as hard to achieve a final goal.
1. For one of my cultural events I went to the art competition here at Thomas More. It was a little different for me because I'm not really the type of person who enjoys art. Thinking back to the chapter though made me realize how much art, sports, and school all have in common, so this made me come in with a open mind. I still didn't enjoy it, but it wasn't as boring as I originally thought. I feel like I grew as a person from this experience.
ReplyDelete2. I am learning about myself a little bit each day since I've been here at Thomas More. I think people view me a lot differently here then they did when I was in Nashville. Going to these events has really helped me see things in new lights, and some stuff I thought would be boring actually turned out to be pretty interesting like the moon event I went to the night of the eclipse.
1. I recently went to the Special Olympics bowling which was new for me. I really did help out in many ways and I enjoyed seeing them have fun.
ReplyDelete2. I'm learning different things everyday about the people I see outside of class. Like in basketball I have an entire group of new friends. They are helping me know myself better each day.
Cultural Events:
ReplyDelete1.) Volleyball Game: I recently attended the volleyball trimatch where TMC, DePauw, and Geneva played. The atmosphere for the games were much different than the atmosphere I'm comfortable with for tennis matches. It was very interesting to see fans be so involved in the game. This experience made me realize the close community we have at Thomas More, especially in the sports realm.
2.) Special Olympics Bowling: By volunteering with my teammates and bowling with members of the special olympics, I learned the value of having fun and maintaing a positive outlook on life. While I participated in this event, it made me realize that being selfless and helping other people is important.
3.) Improvisational Jazz: Although I didn't particularly like the style of music performed, the show made me realize the importance of respecting other people's preference of music. The performers had dedicated much time and effort in learning the art of improvisational jazz and found it very important to preserve it as a fading art form.
1) One of the first cultural events I went to was the Lunar Eclipse Party at the observatory. I was a little hesitant on going, because I figured who is going to come out just to watch the moon when they can look out of their window and see it for themselves. I am glad I decided to go, because as soon as I got their I saw not only our Thomas More community, but people from all over town to watch the moon. This being my first event for college, it shocked me to see how close knit the community was with Thomas More.
ReplyDelete2) What I learned about myself and the community that I am now apart of is that we don't always come together for only sports, their are many other things that can be interesting and bring people together other than sporting events.
3) This reminded me that when we were talking in class how that a sport can bring a whole community together. When we were talking it sounded like that was the only thing that could bring a community together, but now that I think about it, the little things can bring a community together- like looking up at the moon.
1) I sang in front of people at karaoke which was new for me. I'm a bad singer but it was still pretty fun to belt out some serious tunes the best I could. I learned that it's ok to do things you're not good at as long as you're having fun
ReplyDelete2) I'm learning very quickly how all of the athletic teams here support each other. When I went to a volleyball game it was cool to see that other soccer players were there and then there were many volleyball players at lots of the soccer games too.
For my cultural events I went to a poet seminar, The Frankenstein Play, and the Art show.
ReplyDeleteThe art how was very interesting to me. I am not really the person to get into that type of art, but it made me realize this is a huge way some people express themselves. Like playing a sport is a way many individuals express who they are or what they love to do, but for some, it is painting and drawing, which is very cool. Expressing yourself can be difficult sometimes because not everyone is understanding of the ways you do it, but form what I saw in the art gallery, they were very successful and it was actually very easy for me to see what they were trying to displays in the picture or sculptures.
2.) I have learned alot of different things since college has started. One big thing that I realized is that everyoen has a different views on life than others. I think it is very cool to see what other people are interested in other than sports and school. You never really know a person or what their life is about until you actually talk to them. I realized you can't make judgements or go to conclusion about somethings or some people because you may not know what their story is, or why they are the way they are.
1. I went to the volleyball game on senior night, which was new for me because that was the first Thomas More game I attended other than football. I actually enjoyed watching the game, and it was interesting seeing all the other sport teams there supporting the girls volleyball. I learned from other people that student athletes at TMC support one another by going to games and cheering on their fellow classmates.
ReplyDelete2. I learned just because I'm not involved in sports other than football doesn't mean I can't still attend games and support them.
1. One of my cultural experiences that I did was volunteering with Special Olympic Bowling. When my coach had told us about this opportunity, I was really excited about volunteering. My uncle has Down Syndrome, so I kind of knew what to expect going into it. A huge thing that I learned from this experience was to just enjoy life and be positive.
ReplyDelete2. From this experience I'm learning that I've been taking life way too seriously. Another thing this cultural experience helped me see was how awesome it was to see just about my whole team there having a good time. It bonded us in a way, after we left, we all had different stories to share about what we experienced or who we met.
For my cultural events I attended Thomas More sporting events such as volleyball. Also, I attended the Lunar Eclipse night on campus, and took part in both special Olympics bowling, and special Olympics football. I was not really uncomftorable for any of these, the only thing I could say is that I have done volunteer work in the past but going into the Special Olympics I did not know what to expect. I feel that through the experience I learned the value of patience and how big of an impact setting aside a few hours for a good cause can make in someones life, including myself.
ReplyDeleteFrom my experience I learned that I have taken my life and my abilities for granted. Not everyone is blessed with health so it is important to make the most out of the gifts I was given. And from what I have learned from others and myself thus far is that everyone should support everyone. Just because I do not play football or basketball doesn't meant that I should not support them, we are one family at Thomas More and we should strive to cheer on all other teams.

I attended several cultural event such as Special olympics, the local high school art show, and several fall sporting events. I was very excited to work special olympics because I've had a lot of experience with special needs athletes while volunteering at Redwood Schooling. I was very excited to see fellow Cov Cath artist work up in the local art show. Artist Peter Ward, Cody Caldon, and Logan Merkel were featured in the show with excellent surrealistic and still life pieces. My favorite athletic event that i attended was the Women's Soccer PAC championship. Each team has a specific atmosphere that comes with them but the atmosphere of the game and the tail gate was one of the best experiences I've had at TMC so far.
ReplyDeleteFrom these events I've learned that no matter how you feel about that certain sport, art piece, or classwork you should always give a hundred percent because someone else is working harder than you because it means the world to them.
I attended many cultural events over this semester, and not because I was made to. I really enjoy helping out the community and meeting new people. I know our basketball team was forced to go to special Olympics bowling, but I would have regardless. My little brother has down syndrome and is one of the best people I know. Being able to associate with people that aren't able to do the things I do on a daily basis without the help of someone, and to be so happy all the time is such a life lesson that I feel anyone can appreciate. Ive learned that many people are not as comfortable with people they cant communicate with very well. Meaning I notice many of my friends that are talkative around me, are not so social around people they don't understand.
