Trouble in Fantasy Land

Let's together sort out a few questions (that means not everyone answers each question, but builds on the previous answer to get a full response for each question)
1) what has been going on?
2) why is it wrong?  Use your ethical theories to analyze.
3) what should happen?

  1. 1) In states where betting is illegal, citizens are placing bets on fantasy football by using different websites such as, DraftKings and FanDuel. What makes it worse is that the users of these websites know it is illegal to bet, so they are putting a service on their computer that disguises their location
    2) It is wrong because betting can cause an addiction, which falls into utilitarianism because having a website that can cause people to become addicted to gambling is not minimizing the harm or maximizing the good for the greater number of people. It goes against utilitarianism.
    3) I think that the websites should be taken down- it is hard to control what people do on the internet, even though the government is trying. If also doesn't make it easy if gambling is allowed in some states but not others. If fantasy is controlled I don't think it would be an issue. If there is some way to control what area (such as a certain state) could or could not access the website, that would be ideal.

  2. 1) Gambling is a huge problem and leads to potential strain on relationships, interfere with work or other important tasks, and lastly effects you financially. Gambling is illegal and should be stopped completely. The websites that are allowing this need to be ended especially since they are aware it is illegal. Disguising their location proves that what they are doing is wrong and they know that.
    2) Gambling addiction is literally a type of impulse-control disorder meaning they can not control the urge and want to gamble even when they are aware it is hurting not only themselves but their loved ones. So with that being said it goes against utilitarianism because the website in the article and causing the users to have this addiction. It is not minimizing the harm or maximizing the good for anyone.
    3) I agree that taking the website down would be beneficial. Gambling begins to get out of hand and is no longer fun when an individual is in financial debt or potentially leads to other problems like stealing money to continue a gambling issue.

  3. 1. Gambling has been and still is a major addiction for people. It isn't right that these websites are doing this illegally and just because they hide the location shouldn't mean that they can keep doing it.
    2. Gambling is again an addiction that can cause major problems in a persons life. Like Michaela said, it goes against utilitarianism.
    3. The website should be taken down immediately. All it does is influence people to fall into this trap.

  4. 1. Gambling is an issue, and will always be an issue. Those who gamble can face short term and long term emotional strain. The websites are increasing the issues that come from gambling. It is easily noticed that those who disguised their location from the site know it is illegal.
    2. It is wrong because it has ruined many lives. It makes people think it is easy to make money, when it is really also very easy to lose money. Gambling goes against utilitarianism.
    3. I think it is best to remove the websites, which would be a utilitarian decision.

  5. 1. Gambling is a serious issue but an issue that will never go away. You can outlaw betting all you want but people will find ways to bet. The feeling you get when you win is something that everyone loves and can't be taken away. Technology is ever evolving and people will always find ways to bet over the internet. Even though its wrong its very hard to put a regulation and keep an eye on gambling. Our generation simply has a lot of problems that need to be fixed and gambling is not at the top of them.

  6. 1. A new form of gambling has come to the limelight. People are now able to go online and bet on sports such as fantasy football. Millions and millions of dollars are being out into these websites and it has become such a problem that these sites are being banned in particular states.

    2. This is wrong first because Gambling is a huge addiction, that many people struggle with, and the makers of these websites found an easy and "fun" way for people to gamble without even having to leave the comfort of their bed. By making such websites, people are going against the principle of utilitarianism. It does quite the opposite, maximizing the harm and minimizing the good for an individual.

    3. What I believe should happen is that these cites be banned because it is one thing to gamble at a casino and another to do it from the comfort of ones home in my opinion, The convenience of these websites is the worst part about them, but that being said, nothing with realistically happen against these sites. Someone will petition that the banning of these sites inhibits their freedom and thus access to the sites will remain the same.

    1. 1. the real problem here is that these sites are not labeling themselves as gambling sites, just as normal fantasy sites, which they obviously are not.

      2. This makes it a problem because the people who do have a problem are less likely to realize it because they aren't being told they're gambling so they don't think they are. They also are provided little to no help by these sites when it comes time for them to get it.

      3. Maybe you shouldn't ban them, but put restrictions and safeguards in place in order to ensure that gambling problems are kept to a minimum.

  7. 1)Gabling seems to be becoming a problem more and more. It leads to strains on financial, relationship and business problems. Gambling is illegal and should be stopped. Since these websites that are letting the gabling go on needs to stop especially since they know how illegal gambling is. Disguising their location pretty much says that they are doing wrong and they are aware of it.

2)Gambling is a impulse disorder and they are well aware what it is doing. Gambling hurts loved ones and it can hurt you financially. Gambling goes against utilitarianism because the website stated in the article is letting the users have this addiction.

3)I strongly agree that taking the website down would be best. There is nothing extremely good that comes out of gambling. People can get caught stealing or have debt.

  8. 2.) Gambling online these days has gotten more and more popular with teenagers and adults. People get in trouble for gambling in a casino too much, maybe not get in trouble but they put themselves at risk for addiction. Getting addicted to gambling, before you know it all of you money will be gone. I think there needs to be a more strategic and smarter way to gamble for fun, so that teenagers are not blowing $300 to $400 on just one little game.
